Vijay Diwas #KargilDiwas #KargilHeroes

Author: Swati Mohandas Tamhankar

Quartered in snow, silent to remain. When the bugle calls, they shall rise and match again.’ – this is the scroll of honour at the Siachen base camp.

Kargil Vijay Diwas (Kargil Victory Day) is commemorated on every 26th July in India. On this day, India succeeded in ousting Pakistani forces from their occupied positions on the mountain tops of Northern Kargil District in Ladakh in the year 1999. This war was fought for more than 3 months. Hence, this day is marked as Vijay Diwas in the Kargil war over Pakistanis.

Initially, Indian soldiers in the area of LOC (Line of Control) assumed that the infiltrators were jihadis and declared that they would evict them within a few days.

Subsequent discovery of infiltration elsewhere along the LOC,  with the difference in tactics employed by the infiltrators, caused the Indian army to realize that the plan of attack was on a much bigger scale. The Pakistani army took advantage of the melting snow and betraying the bilateral understanding of both the nations that the post would remain unattended during the winter season took command of the high outposts of India.

The Government of India responded with ‘Operation Vijay’, a mobilization of 2,00,000 Indian troops. The war was officially ended on July 26th, 1999 with the eviction of Pakistan Army troops. Unfortunately, 527 valiant soldiers from the Indian Armed Forces lost their lives and 1363 soldiers were wounded during this war.

It would not be wrong to say that war is never justified. This causes major losses on both the warring countries and India is a peace-loving country that does not believe in war.

Our strong and courageous soldiers always safeguard the nation from alien forces, sacrifice for our motherland and keeps us safe and secure.

On this day, let’s salute and pay our admiration to our troops who have devoted themselves to our country and  fought bravely whenever the need has arisen.
