This was not the first time Nina had noticed the flashing neon sign in front of a store that read ‘Psychic Sapna’. The glass windows had a flier, ‘I’ve the power to fulfil your dreams.’
There was a phone number as well as the option of walk-ins. Through the glass window, Nina could see the front room. It was adorned invitingly with glittering crystals of all sorts, plush paintings and a cozy satin-cushioned purple sofa.
Just as she was about to turn around and continue on, the door opened and a woman’s deep voice said, “Welcome!”
It was Psychic Sapna. Dressed in a flowery red kaftan, her hair wrapped in a sequined dupatta, she seated her visitor and looked intently at her.
“Tell me what makes you so sad?”
“I’m interested in my classmate. He looks at me, smiles and even accepts my greeting cards and birthday presents, but doesn’t make a single move.”
“Ah! The usual case of love. I can tell from your aura that you’ve suffered a lot from feelings of rejection. You know in your heart that he loves you. That’s the problem, no?”
“Exactly!” said Nina excitedly.
Taking a deep breath, with her eyes shut for a moment, the psychic continued, “My spirit guides tell me that there’re energy blocks between you. Once we take them out, this man will come to you easily.”
“Wow! Really?”
“Yes, but that’s going to take work. I can fulfil your dreams and you’ll see the result, I guarantee you.”
“Okay.”
“It’ll cost forty thousand rupees.”
“That’s a lot of money!”
“Madam if you want the man in your life, he’s not going to come free.”
“But that’s too much!”
“Oh please! I’ve clients from all over the world who spend ten times more!” “I’ll think about it!” said Nina finally.
As she left, she was relieved she had trusted the hoodwinking vibe she got. “Even if Sapna can help me with her psychic powers, who needs to buy love?”
