On Army Day, we honor the extraordinary courage, unwavering commitment, and sacrifices of our Army personnel. Their relentless dedication to protecting our nation and upholding our sovereignty is a testament to their bravery. They are the pillars of strength and resilience.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Indian Army Day is celebrated every year on 15th January—a proud day for every Indian. This day commemorates the dedication, sacrifice, bravery, and courage of the Indian Army.

Indian Army Day is dedicated to the brave soldiers who have devoted their lives to ensuring the security of our country. It is a time to express gratitude to these courageous individuals for their unwavering commitment to duty.

This day marks a historic milestone when Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from the last British Commander-in-Chief, General Sir Francis Butcher, on January 15, 1949.

Field Marshal Cariappa led the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947. After retirement, he was awarded the rank of Field Marshal in 1986. He also received the Order of the British Empire for defeating the Japanese in Burma during the Second World War.

From the gallantry of soldiers in World Wars to their heroics in post-independence wars like 1947, 1965, 1971, and Kargil in 1999, countless soldiers have displayed unmatched valor. Legends like Captain Vikram Batra and Param Vir Chakra awardees Major Somnath Sharma and Captain Manoj Pandey, among others, have inspired generations. Beyond battlefields, the Army has been a pillar of support in disaster relief and peacekeeping missions. Each soldier’s sacrifice reaffirms India’s pride and gratitude toward these selfless protectors of the nation. Their legacy endures forever.

In a landmark announcement on January 1, 2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms,’ signaling a decisive shift towards a more agile, technologically advanced, and combat-ready Armed Forces.

The ‘Year of Reforms’ builds on the Indian Army’s ‘Year of Transformation’ (2023) and ‘Years of Technology Absorption’ (2024 and 2025). Recognizing the long gestation period required for meaningful change, the Indian Army has identified 2023 to 2032 as the ‘Decade of Transformation.’ The announcement of 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms’ provides strategic direction and momentum to this long-term initiative.

Ranked 4th globally in military aspects, the Indian Army’s sacrifices to safeguard our nation command immense respect and gratitude. To honor and thank them, we celebrate Indian Army Day every year.
