Monsoon and Skin Care

Author: Amrita Mallik

Who doesn’t want a glowing skin and a fresh feel? Even I want it badly, especially when Kolkata humidity is making my face oily and drooping.

And, when it is monsoon, the dampness of the weather attracts skin infections, allergies and fungus. We become susceptible to acne, rashes and other skin conditions. Hence, it is important to alter the skincare regimen according to the changing seasons.

I have tried many techniques, watching the TV ads and shows. I have even followed the Youtube and Instagram tutorials. They haven’t satisfied me. Besides, they are time consuming and often not affordable.

I can swear by the below-mentioned tips for my skin care:

• A healthy lifestyle, including adequate nutrition, regular exercise and sufficient sleep, keeps major problems at bay. It provides a natural glow, clears the skin and makes it supple. And, yes, there’s no harm in having fried food, in portion as a treat sometimes. Hydrating myself with water to overcome humidity. It makes the skin look pale and dull. Ample water intake ensures that the skin can retain its moisture and shine.

• Since dirt, oil and grime easily accumulate on the face in rainy season, I wash my face, at least, twice daily. This prevents breakouts and fungal infections.

• To get rid of clogged pores and dead skin cells, exfoliationis a must. Using mildly abrasive kitchen ingredients like coffee, papaya, yogurt, tea bag and baking soda stimulates the growth of new skin cells.

• A good-quality sunscreen is a shield against harmful UV rays. Irrespective of the weather outside it is a must to avoid skin damage. I use gel or water-based sunscreen for my oily skin. I apply it at least 20-minutes before I step into the kitchen and of course going out.

• I use a light moisturiser to keep my face less oily. A gel or water-based moisture doesn’t clog pores. It doesn’t let the skin get dry and preserves it glow. It also helps me to get rid of untimely arrival of wrinkles.

• The humid weather also affects the lips, making them dry and chapped. I use a scrub to keep them supple and smooth.• Hair fall is one definite problem during the monsoons.

To keep the hair fresh and clean, I wash it twice a week. After working out when I get all sweaty, I air dry my hair. I avoid blow dryers and hair straighteners but it’s my choice.

• Non-alcoholic and organic products are beneficial for a good and healthy skin. They can be used long term as they maintain the skin’s suppleness.

This monsoon, I hope to be extra attentive of my skin care. By following these tips, I will certainly avoid skin issues.
Hopefully it will be rejuvenated and uphold its radiance.
