Love Beyond Boundaries: Built on the Foundation of Mutual Understanding

Love is like a melodious tune that resonates across the world—it knows no space, no limits.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been born into a family with a broad-minded outlook. Unlike many of my generation, I was never burdened with unnecessary societal taboos. Now, at 75, I look back with gratitude at the freedom I was given—something rare in those days. Pursuing education in a coeducational environment was almost unimaginable back then, yet my parents encouraged me to study, learn music and dance, and express myself through acting. Even interacting with the opposite gender, a concept frowned upon in my time, was not restricted in my family.

Ours was a progressive household, and my brother was the first to go abroad for higher studies. He pursued his education in London and later settled in Canada, marrying a girl from our own community. Over time, our priorities evolved, technology changed our world, and our relationships took on new dimensions. As our children grew, they brought fresh perspectives into our lives, shaping the way we viewed love and marriage.

As my brother’s family expanded, so did the diversity within it. Though he settled in Canada, he ensured his children remained deeply connected to their Indian roots. His two daughters trained in Indian classical music and dance, even performing on international stages. Despite being Canadian citizens, their cultural foundation remained intact.

His elder daughter married a Sri Lankan Christian. While her husband, James, retained his faith, their daughters were named Saraswati and Lakshmi, embracing both Indian and Sri Lankan traditions. Their home became a beautiful blend of cultures, where customs from both backgrounds thrived.

His son later married a Canadian, further shrinking international distances within our family. In this fusion of love beyond boundaries, we saw the true essence of unity in diversity. His four children were given beautiful Indian names, and their household embraced both Hinduism and Christianity, worshipping Lord Ganesha alongside Jesus.

His youngest daughter married an Austrian Jew. Even here, love blossomed across cultural lines. Their two sons, too, were given Indian names, and their Austrian father developed a deep reverence for Lord Ganesha. This, to me, is the perfect example of a family built on love, compassion, and mutual understanding.

Our family bonds have deepened, evolving into a world of vulnerability, positivity, and unwavering support. Love beyond boundaries can only thrive with understanding at its core. After all, humanity itself cannot survive without it.

When we gather as a family, our relationships are defined not by differences but by unity. Affection goes beyond surface-level bonds—we exchange ideas, share traditions, and embrace each other’s cultures. Religion becomes a bridge rather than a barrier, as we find common ground in values like empathy, patience, and acceptance. Our festivals have become shared celebrations, uniting us all.

So far, we have faced no significant challenges in these interfaith and intercultural marriages. There is no frustration—only a willingness to adjust and accommodate each other. The key to this harmony? Listening with patience and showing respect for one another’s beliefs. Praise and appreciation are freely given, strengthening our relationships.

The most fascinating part of our family gatherings is the languages spoken. We communicate in English, while others speak Spanish, French, or their native tongues. And yet, we understand each other perfectly—perhaps through gestures, laughter, and shared emotions. This, too, is a testament to the strength of our bond.

Our relationships are not complicated; rather, they are deeply rewarding. Families come together for pujas and havans, just as they find peace in attending church. Instead of resentment, we see adjustment and respect.

What makes our journey unique is that our family embraced this diversity 25 years ago—something extraordinary for that time. It opened doors to new perspectives and redefined our outlook on love and relationships.

Over time, we have welcomed alliances from various communities—Punjabi, Rajput, Agarwal, and more. In doing so, we have contributed, in our small way, to changing societal perceptions and mental conditioning.

Love transcends all boundaries—it is intangible yet deeply felt. It shines like the sun, unwavering and warm. True love is unconditional, beyond societal norms, and free from limitations. Perhaps love has a language of its own, one that is universally understood.

Of course, love is not without its challenges. Barriers of race, religion, ethnicity, and social structure still exist. In some parts of the world, love across communities is even criminalized. It is crucial, therefore, to support those who dare to follow their hearts and challenge outdated norms.

Love is a personal journey, yet society often dictates its course. But history has shown us that when one stands firm in their beliefs, even the impossible can become reality.
