Music: Part of my existence

Author: Shilpi Roy

If you ask me, music is an integral part of my existence. Whether it is retro, classical, or fusion, I love the beats and the harmony. I have grown up listening to classical music, thanks to my mother, who is a trained singer. I love the taal, bol, and anything rhythmic.

I wondered how the legendary RD Burman made music using glasses ( the beginning music of Chura liya hai tumne). I’m immensely fond of Ghazals, as my dad had an amazing song collection of Ghazal maestros, like Jagjit Singh ji, Gulam Ali Sahab, and Mehendi Hasan Sahab. The lyrics and music touched my soul. Whether it was my home or our car, Ghazals were extra special. I could keep listening to them all day long as it was soothing to my ears. “Don’t stop the music…please.”

Marasim, was forever in our playlist, as it had the awesome pair of Gulzar Saab and Jagjit ji. How I admire the deadly duo! Besides Ghazals, I loved the pop albums featuring Sonu Nigam and Shaan. Deewana and Tanha Dil, are still lingering on my lips, even my daughter enjoys listening to them. Lucky to be born in the ’90s, we got the best of Indi pop and Bollywood. From Pakistani singers like Shafqat Amanat Ali and Ali Haider to Indian divas Shweta Shetty and Falguni Pathak, the entire era was mellifluous. Not to forget, Breathless by Shankar Mahadevan ji, it deserves a special mention. Music flows in the veins, music is our soul. I’m ever grateful to the wonderful musicians our nation has produced.
