“May the sun in his course visit no land more free, more lovely, than this, our country.” – Sardar Bhagat Singh

“Don’t see others doing better than you. Beat your own records every day, because success is a fight between you and yourself.”

Pre-Independence Years

I was born after our country was freed from the Britishers.
I was just three years old. As I grew up, I heard my grandparents and parents talk about their younger years and the hardships they had faced during the battle for freedom. Many relatives and great leaders sacrificed their lives and lived in very bad conditions. There was a shortage of essential things and food items. They faced many struggles but endured them bravely. Everyone was happy on August 15, 1947.

The Development After Our Freedom

“No one can aim and dream of an overnight change.”

Our first President and Prime Minister aimed to take our country forward. They worked hard, and progress was seen, though at a slower pace. To change the mindset of people is not an easy job. It requires planning and execution to achieve any goal. People have to be taken into confidence. Freedom of speech and action were there, but it was not easy to express opinions openly. In those years, only print media – the newspapers – were the main source of expression. People used to write to the editors.

Running a country is not as easy as it seems. The opposition raised many questions, and to get their points implemented was a tough job. Getting freedom does not mean one can do what they feel. One has to obey the laws passed by Parliament. Everything has a plus and minus point.

Under British rule, people were afraid of punishment. But when our country was free, some believed, “Now we are independent, should we still be afraid and follow rules?”

The Present Time

After nearly 79 years of Independence, we see a lot of development over the years under many governments.

  • More girls are educated as parents understand the value of educating a girl child.
  • More youngsters come out to vote, as they know it is their right and take pride in that.
  • People are aware of their rights and raise their voices.
  • The dowry system has dropped down.
  • Safety of girls and women needs to be addressed more efficiently, and people should remain alert.
  • Women are included in many fields – from homemakers to the three forces.
  • More defense techniques should be taught to girls.
  • Girls are free to talk about their menstrual cycle openly to doctors.
  • Boys are taught to help at home equally, just like girls.

All these show that the mindset of parents is changing. As both parents are working in many homes, they make their children strong and independent.

I only feel that no one should misuse the freedom of using mobiles and social media to learn negative things. Instead, they should use it to learn new, useful things to improve our nation – Bharat – and see that we are at the top one day.

Good luck to us.
