Our country has always followed the path of patriarchy and domestic violence has never been new to us; however, it is on the upswing since pandemic hit us all. During pandemic the economic, social and personal relationships have become extremely sensitive and facing repercussions. The most badly hit in recent times are the women community.
Being confined together during lockdown period led to higher instances of interpersonal abuse and violence. Some women have a disproportionate burden to care for the house and family and to live with an abusive partner puts their mental and physical health at risk. Amidst this pandemic, a hidden pandemic is emerging out which is domestic violence and this will not end unlike the lockdown will; one day. We have to understand gender-based abuse thoroughly to derive a clear-cut solution.
Anyone is capable of being an abuser and anyone is bound to be a victim.
The number of crimes against women has always been under reported. ‘#MeToo’ in spite of being one of the most powerful initiatives taken by the feminist movement in India, had seen many pitfalls in bringing the offenders down. While our culture infused with the patriarchal fear has certainly kept many women away from raising their voices.
Domestic abuse is a menace of our society and the situation is becoming miserable. It becomes the duty of the judiciary to implement effective laws and take correct measure in cases of non-compliance. We need a comprehensive nationwide campaign to bring awareness among the people and make them hypersensitised towards the issue.
These issues must be highlighted through various channels like radio, television and via social media platforms. These platforms must be strategically used in the same way as the government has used for washing hands and social distancing to combat covid-19.
To sum it up, I would like to quote Swami Vivekanand, who rightly said that ‘There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of woman is improved. It is not possible for a bird to fly only on one wing’.
This is such a sad part of our lives where everyday we hear, not only in India but across the globe women go through this hidden pandemic.
I must say Swati, you have put up your points so brilliantly highlighting this dark side of the patriarchal society in an intellectual manner. Loved it alot and really wish for a good change.
