Tears of Pride: Inspiring Journey of a Cobbler’s Son Who Became a Doctor

Father and son celebrating graduation in front of UNAM library mural, Mexico City.

Raju was the son of a cobbler in our area. He went to a Government school and was in the tenth. His father was in his middle age and his mother stitched clothes in their basti. Raju had a younger sick sister to be taken care of.

Raju was loved by his teachers and the Principal. They took extra care of his studies. They wanted him to do well and top the school and the district. He worked hard to make everyone proud and do something purposeful for himself, his family, and society.

On the day of the result, the teachers and the Principal were jubilant to hear the news that Raju topped the school and the district. That was the first time a boy from the lower class topped.

They picked him up and took him all over the city. Raju’s parents shed tears of pride. Sweets were distributed among the students and children in the basti. Everyone danced and celebrated the joyful moment.

Raju got admission to a good college and after completing his twelfth, sat for NEET — and came out successfully. All were happy for him. He received a scholarship to study a medical course.

He had to stay in a hostel. The parents were sad but happy that one day their son would be a successful doctor.

The medical course was tough, but Raju worked hard and was determined to become a doctor.

“Time flies quickly,” they say.

It was true. That day arrived when Raju topped the Medical Exam. He was praised by everyone and started as an intern in a reputed hospital. The patients and the doctors were happy with Raju’s work. After his two years of internship, he became a full-fledged doctor.

He got offers to work in good hospitals but Dr. Raju opened a clinic near his basti to serve the poor who could not afford high fees or buy medicines. He took very minimal fees and happily treated people. If any patient had to be referred to a good hospital, he helped them get admitted and took care of the fees.

He was “Dr. Babu” for all — loved by everyone. The Government Health Officers visited his clinic to check hygiene, treatment, and care. They were highly impressed by his kind behaviour and awarded him good recognition, along with a bigger place for his clinic.

The clinic turned into a small hospital with 50 beds. He appointed nurses and provided good food and other basic facilities.

He married a doctor friend.
Both together worked hard and earned a good name.

The Chief Minister of the State gave him an award as the Best Doctor. The tears of pride could be seen in his parents’ eyes — and in the eyes of his people.

If given a chance to study, anyone from any background or status can achieve their desired goals in life.

One should encourage and give them a chance — a chance to shed tears of pride rather than tears of sorrow.
