Trick or Treat: Accept What Comes with a Smile

Two adorable children dressed as angel and devil whispering secrets during a Halloween studio shoot.

“Life, much like Halloween, is full of unexpected knocks — some bring laughter, some bring lessons. Accept both with a smile, and you’ll find sweetness in every surprise.”

Every year, as October draws to a close, I see children walking down the streets dressed as fairies, wizards, and little ghosts — their laughter echoing through the night as they go door to door, chanting “trick or treat!” Their baskets fill with sweets, their faces light up with joy, and for them, the evening becomes a little adventure filled with surprises.

I never celebrated Halloween as a child, but I’ve always been fascinated by its spirit — the fun, the curiosity, and the willingness to take whatever comes, be it a trick or a treat, with a smile. And somewhere, I feel that’s exactly how life should be lived.

Each day we step into is like knocking on a new door. Sometimes life rewards us with treats — success, love, appreciation, or unexpected moments of happiness. On other days, it plays a few tricks — disappointments, delays, or struggles we didn’t see coming. But just as those children laugh off a harmless trick and move on to the next house, we too can learn to accept life’s surprises with grace and good humour.

The “tricks” in life are not punishments. They’re gentle lessons in disguise. They teach us patience, build resilience, and remind us that growth often happens when things don’t go as planned. The “treats,” meanwhile, make the journey sweeter — the smiles, the victories, the warm conversations that light up even the dullest days.

What I love most about Halloween is how every child, no matter what they receive, keeps walking forward, hopeful that the next door will bring something exciting. And isn’t that a beautiful metaphor for life? We may not know what awaits us, but the courage to keep moving forward — to trust that good things are still ahead — makes all the difference.

So, this Halloween, even if you’re not out there collecting sweets, remember to embrace the spirit behind it. Welcome both the tricks and the treats with the same smile. Laugh a little more, worry a little less, and let every experience, good or bad, add meaning to your story.

Because at the end of the day, life is a lot like Halloween — it’s not about what you receive, but how you choose to respond.

Keep your basket of hope open, keep walking, and let life surprise you — trick or treat!
