Music: The soul of life

Author: Amita Raj

#Music

As a classical singer like myself, singing ardently in both the Hindustani style that I grew up with and the Western operatic genre I adopted during my travels, I ask myself what could possibly bring a richer glow to my soul than the gift of melody?

In fascination I see how both worlds of music eastern and western, though so culturally diverse, evoke by the sheer loveliness of their sound, many tears, smiles, laughter and more fundamentally, our natural emotional rapture to the very rhythms and colours of music emanating from Nature, our mother.

Such a response goes far more deeply than formally structured music.
Within Nature for instance, rings such a plethora of tunes that we naturally enjoy. Birds above us twittter in their multiple octaves, timbers and sweet symphonies. Ocean waves swish along the shore in a tranquil rhythm as does the breeze in its surreptitious whispers echoing through swaying leaves of trees.

Music burgeons everywhere, through radio and TV channels in homes, in the whistle or informal song of a passerby on the street or the tunes playing out of today’s fancy electronic devices. It inhabits our lives as a very part and parcel of it.

We even hear music in the chugging sound and rhythm of trains. A wave of nostalgia sweeps over me as I recall the rhythmic choo choo music of the last of the steam trains, musical journeys whose haunting song is etched in so many hearts.

Even amidst the most mundane humdrum of life, reigns the opulence of melodious sound that we live and connect with everywhere and everyday, and from so many sources. How thankful I am therefore, for the delicious riches of melody resonating through our very life!
