One evening, while I was alone at home, I was watching one of the Harry Potter movies. Suddenly, I heard a voice nearby say, “This movie? Again?”
I jumped out of my skin. I had no idea where the voice had come from, so I looked at my phone to check if a random app was running in the background. This glitch had happened before—sometimes I’d hear audio even when I wasn’t actively using it. But this time, there was nothing open. I shrugged it off and continued watching the film.
About halfway through, I paused the movie and went to the kitchen to grab a snack. That’s when I heard the voice again: “Why can’t they just turn me off when they’re not in the room? Who am I supposed to cool, Harry Potter?”
Half-walking, half-running back into the living room with a glass of juice in my hand, I looked around wildly. The voice spoke again: “Man! I’d kill to have some of that juice, no lie.”
I looked up and nearly dropped the glass because of my loud gasp of shock.
Right above my head, I saw a pair of googly eyes and a mouth shaped into a perfect ‘O,’ the expression of someone (or something?) caught red-handed. It grimaced and said weakly, “Um, how do you do?”
Now, dear reader, you may think I replied with a simple “fine” and struck up a conversation with the talking fan, eventually becoming the best of friends.
Well, sorry to disappoint you.
I did the sensible thing instead—I grabbed my phone and house keys, rushed to my neighbour’s house, called my parents, and narrated the entire scenario. Within the next 24 hours, we had the fan replaced.
